Havana Club Rum, Discotheque & Dogbox presents LE CASTLE VANIA (USA) at The Assembly
Posted on August 27th, 2010 No commentsIts the weekend, which means its time to kick loose and get into the groove. 17 on Loader guesthouse has found the perfect way to get the party started on Friday night in Cape Town!
Havana Club Rum & Discotheque present Le Castle Vania (USA) at The Assembly on Friday 27th August 2010, in association with Griet – its gonna be a night to remember so get ready to party people!
Atlanta based and internationally renowned, Le Castle Vania, commonly known as Dylan Eiland, quickly escaped the local trappings of his hometown in Georgia to play music around the world. Atlanta’s burgeoning music scene allowed him to develop his passion for music and nightlife, and he soon gained notoriety with his riotous DJ sets and penchant for production, which made him a household name in the dirty and distorted, indie-electro scene.
His signature sound blends grinding disco punk with strong electronic beats and catchy synth leads, resulting in banging electro music that is dark and dirty but somehow equally uplifting and danceable. New mixes to check out include Tigertron, an original work off of his first non-remix release, “Troubletron EP,” and remixes of “Come Out” for 120 days (Vice Records) and “Bombs” for Scanners (Dim Mak Records), which have all received critical appraisal from the indie electro world.
His most recent creative endeavor is one part musical production, one part DJ performance, one part Blake Miller of Moving Units/Weird Science notoriety, and numerous parts of innovation…namely Lies In Disguise. After finding a home at So Sweet Records and cranking out some original tracks and remixes for Partyshank and Toxic Avenger these two have gained notoriety as the up-and-comers to keep your eye on.
Le Castle Vania will be joined in Cape Town by Some of the most awesome DJs around: Battle Beyond beyond the Stars, bteam, Double Adaptor (JHB), Haezer, El Gordo & The Brick City Massive, with visuals by Dan Ting Chong.
Presale tickets cost R60, and limited tickets will be available at the door for R90 each.
Presale tickets can be purchased via http://www.webtickets.co.za/assembly or at Shelflife (119 Loop Street) (Cash Only). More information available at http://www.theassembly.co.za

Jack Parow
Posted on April 8th, 2010 No commentsReferred to as “Bob Dylan of the northern suburbs”, “pirate of the caravan park” and “an Afrikaans Eminem“, Zander Tyler is more popularly known for his on-stage persona as Jack Parow – one of South Africa’s most prominent popular culture icons.
As “Cooler as Ekke” has monopolized African airwaves, Afrikaans, Mothercity-made Jack Parow, has become one of South Africa’s local loves.
At the early end of the decade, musical movements that tore Afrikaans music apart from religious zeal, resulted in the Belville Rock city phenomena – and so spawned bands the likes of Fokofpolisiekar, aKing, and Van Coke Kartel. So while Afrikaans music was once ripe with religious evangelism, the noughties saw it slowly became synonymous with grunge garage-sale outfits and angsty rock ‘n roll.
Lucky for us though, the the latest revolution is Afrikaans music seems to be an all-fun Afrikaans rap movement. Die Antwoord and Jack Parow are core examples of Afrikaans music moving away from rock tracks, toward electro back beats and theatrical rap personas.
Die Vraagstuk: Die Heuwels Fantasties feat. Jack Parow
Zander Tyler first fell under spotlight for the song, Die Vraagstuk, which he produced for another Afrikaans-admiration, Die Heuwels Fantasties. Since then Jack Parow’s sharp tongue has earned him critical acclaim: Think Afrikaans social criticism – gratefully disguised in shock-worthy colloquialisms and boundary-pushing humour. Feeding the Afrikaans youth’s need for upbeat and bass, Jack Parow’s jerk-quirky lyrics and crazy costuming set him apart from South African acts.
Their latest success – the Cooler as Ekke music video – conveys Jack Parow’s crazy contagious stage presence. Be sure to catch them in Cape Town live!

P.H.Fat and Playdoe LIVE!!!
Posted on February 5th, 2010 No commentsThe discotheque series, presented at Assembly, has done nothing to disappoint. Tonight they bring us two of South Africa’s most deliciously high-rising, local acts - Playdoe and P.H.Fat.
Both dreamteams have exploded onto the South African music scene by pioneering their amalgam genres. Playdoe’s name says it – a malleable genre, a fluid sound and a playful live act that is almost evangelical about, “it’s that beat”. Playdoe consists of Sibot – the genius that brought you Max Normal, Constructus, Closet Snare, Knights of the Round and Real Estate Agents – while Spoek supplies the god-step and the man purse. They’ve toured Europe and played with the calibre of Anti Pop Consortium, DJ Krush, DJ Food, Afrikan Boy, Dan La Sac vs Scroobius Pip, M.Sayyid (solo), Buzzcocks, Cadence Weapon, Dizzee Rascal… in nutshell, they can hold their nuggets amongst the good-beat-gods.
P.H.Fat , and their motto, “dance so hard you blood turns to mayonnaise”, bring social satire and a darkness to their mish-mash of experimental rap/electro. Masters of localized lyrical masterstrokes, “Eskom’s coming! Turn out the lights”, is one of their most celebrated song lines. In addition their superstar-less, diva-free nature and sardonic self-deprecating humour, make them a crazy enjoyable live act.
To see is to believe. These guys are going places, and they reaffirm the faith in South Africa, that seasons of Idols have repeatedly robbed us of.
Other acts include the consortium of Richard III, Liver, Lapse and Mastercash.
DOORS OPEN AT 9PM and entrane is R30 Before 9:30 and R50 After.
Do yourself a favour. Hope to see you there.

Mumbo Jumbo
Posted on January 29th, 2010 1 commentI’m tired of going out only to find that I am surrounded by people there to claim “cool” rather than have a good time – so I’m hoping tonight will be nothing like that. Kids who know and love the glitchy electro-drum-bass-dub-type stuff (that is the popular genre to emerge from the gamer generation), will know that the dubstep scene has exploded in the mothercity. So for those who are looking for a tide of people kicking it to electro vibration – rather than a sea of luminous trucker caps, wife-beaters and well-dressed wall flowers – then I’m hoping Mumbo Jumbo is it.
Mumbo Jumbo claims to be a gig for those who dance rather than prance.

SYNERGY LIVE
Posted on November 24th, 2009 No commentsFor festival-goers Christmas came early, and seven years on Synergy Live promises to be even bigger than what it was – one of Cape Town’s most memorable events.

In Franschhoek Valley – the Western Cape’s own land of milk and honey, where vineyards sag with grapes of world-famous wines and there are even more stars in the sky – Boschendal Estate’s green lawns, lush with Spring, will be the backdrop.
Synergy Live pledges a playground permutation of funfair, live acts, camping, multimedia theatrics and marketplace. Nourishment is provided in usual forms of easy and green-cleansy festival food, or the upmarket option of Boschendal’s own picnic basket luncheons, while things to do include the geodesic theatre for cineastes, carnival rides and backward bungees and, of course, the music.
Better-known live acts include Capt Stu, 7th Son, Plastics, van Coke Kartel, Hog Hoggidy Hog, New Academics, Rudimentals, Taxi Violence, Fokofpolisikar, Aking, Prime Circle, Goldfish, Zebra and Giraffe, and the Dirty Skirts. These acts will be featured on the bigger better outdoor stage, while the bar stage features unplugged and old-school acts – for those laying low between doses of delirium.
Most excitingly, for the dub generation is the electro-drome. Dedicated to top of class DJs and the heaving underground, this will be where it’s still going when the live acts shut their eyes.
With exceptional, eclectic line-ups ranging from PH fat and Killer Robot, to Craig de Sousa, Tony Finger and Shaun Duvet, Synergy Live caters to everyone’s preferred mayhem.
This weekend Friday 27th to Sunday 29th, Synergy Live can’t be missed. And for those of you feeling the end of month pinch, tickets range from R380 to R150 dependent on duration. It’s a steal. Check out the line-up here.
