  • Author David James Smith talks about the Young Mandela

Posted on September 2nd, 2010 wotzupcapetown No comments

17 on Loader guesthouse in Cape Town has been invited to Kalk Bay Books to hear about Nelson Mandela, the man, the myth, the legend. Author David James Smith talks about the Young Mandela – his new book, published by Jonathan Ball Publishers.

David James Smith will be in conversation with Donald Paul to discuss the new biography that’s got everyone talking.

Nelson Mandela is the world’s greatest living icon, universally recognised as a leader who symbolises moral authority. He has been mythologised as a flawless hero of the liberation struggle. But how exactly did his early personal and political life shape the triumphs to come?

For the first time, we have evidence of a specific personal motivation for Mandela’s fight against apartheid, and the book sheds light on the significant extent to which Mandela relied on white activists – a part of South African history the ANC has ignored or tried to bury. Mandela’s historic achievements came with a heavy price – this biography graphically describes the emotional turmoil he left in his wake.

After meticulous research, and taking a lead from Mandela’s trusted circle, the author discovers much that is new, with many surprising, sometimes shocking details which will enhance our understanding of the world’s elder statesman. Sanctified, lionised, it turns out that Mandela is a human being after all, only too aware of his flaws and shortcomings.

This re-evaluation of Nelson Mandela’s political and personal life before his long imprisonment dramatically revises our view of its subject. With unique access to people and papers, culminating in a meeting with Nelson Mandela himself, David James Smith has written the single most important contribution to our knowledge of this global icon.

  • Havana Club Rum, Discotheque & Dogbox presents LE CASTLE VANIA (USA) at The Assembly

Posted on August 27th, 2010 wotzupcapetown No comments

Its the weekend, which means its time to kick loose and get into the groove. 17 on Loader guesthouse has found the perfect way to get the party started on Friday night in Cape Town!

Havana Club Rum & Discotheque present Le Castle Vania (USA) at The Assembly on Friday 27th August 2010, in association with Griet – its gonna be a night to remember so get ready to party people!

Le Castle Vania at The Assembly

Atlanta based and internationally renowned, Le Castle Vania, commonly known as Dylan Eiland, quickly escaped the local trappings of his hometown in Georgia to play music around the world. Atlanta’s burgeoning music scene allowed him to develop his passion for music and nightlife, and he soon gained notoriety with his riotous DJ sets and penchant for production, which made him a household name in the dirty and distorted, indie-electro scene.

His signature sound blends grinding disco punk with strong electronic beats and catchy synth leads, resulting in banging electro music that is dark and dirty but somehow equally uplifting and danceable. New mixes to check out include Tigertron, an original work off of his first non-remix release, “Troubletron EP,” and remixes of “Come Out” for 120 days (Vice Records) and “Bombs” for Scanners (Dim Mak Records), which have all received critical appraisal from the indie electro world.

His most recent creative endeavor is one part musical production, one part DJ performance, one part Blake Miller of Moving Units/Weird Science notoriety, and numerous parts of innovation…namely Lies In Disguise. After finding a home at So Sweet Records and cranking out some original tracks and remixes for Partyshank and Toxic Avenger these two have gained notoriety as the up-and-comers to keep your eye on.

Le Castle Vania will be joined in Cape Town by Some of the most awesome DJs around: Battle Beyond beyond the Stars, bteam, Double Adaptor (JHB), Haezer, El Gordo & The Brick City Massive, with visuals by Dan Ting Chong.

Presale tickets cost R60, and limited tickets will be available at the door for R90 each.

Presale tickets can be purchased via http://www.webtickets.co.za/assembly or at Shelflife (119 Loop Street) (Cash Only). More information available at http://www.theassembly.co.za

    DISCOVERING “ADAM”  :AUGUST 2010

“There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or to accept responsibility for changing them.” Denis Waitley.

The greatest threat to modern man is the considerable blight of depression and negativity that is silently consuming at least a third of humanity. Do YOU struggle with this advancing personal limitation?

What are YOU doing about it?
Opting-out in denial or “numbing out” with drugs, alcohol, consumerism or meaningless sex isn’t the solution.
Avoiding your reality in any way can never bring solution--driven healing.
Acquiescing passively to depression is a blight to your considerable inherent potential…choose to be MORE!

ADAM (Anti--Depression Active Management) invites you to a three-hour seminar on how to personally overcome the cloud of depression.
-- Identify the root cause of your depression
-- Actively manage your feelings to positive advantage
-- Discovering purpose; bringing real practical meaning to life.

ADAM is a process created by Clive Harvey Fox – Indigo Man.
Having personally suffered extreme depression following the death of a
child, a divorce and the loss of a significant career, Fox mastered his own recovery inexpensively, without drugs or therapy.

  • Pain in the Neck

Posted on July 29th, 2010 wotzupcapetown No comments

Word is out about professional, honest healthcare from Cape Town’s largest osteopathic practice, and 17 on Loader has all the info you need, just read on….

Dr. Gary Riley, Dr. Suzanne Riley and Dr. Colin Ingram graduated from the European School of Osteopathy in the United Kingdom.

All three practitioners have been involved in private practice both in the United Kingdom and South Africa and have over 15 years of clinical experience, effectively treating and managing musculo-skeletal pain.

Osteopathy is a unique form of physical therapy.  Not to be confused with Physiotherapy nor Chiropractic, Osteopathy provides a holistic and primary care approach to the treatment, rehabilitation and management of soft tissue, joint and skeletal pain and dysfunction.

Osteopathy can assist with the treatment of:

Back Pain, Disc Injuries, Pain in the Neck, Sciatica, Trapped Nerves, Headaches, Joint Pain (Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist, Hand, Hip, Knee, Ankle, Foot), Muscle Pain, Symptoms of Arthritis, Sport Related Injuries, Pain During Pregnancy, Infantile Colic, Sleepless / Irritable Babies, Latching & Suckling Difficulties to name a few.

Osteopathy looks to identify and address the cause of each patient’s pain and dysfunction, not simply treat the symptoms.

By taking this holistic and causation based approach to diagnosis and treatment, the aim is to reduce pain, improve function and most importantly, prevent recurrence.

Cape Town Osteopaths are specialists in their field.  Expertly trained, they are able to fully assess, diagnose and treat.  As such, the patient isn’t required to visit a G.P. / Doctor or other Specialist before their consultation.

Where necessary, they will refer for additional investigations such as X-rays, blood test and scans to assist in more complex problems.  They also use a tried and trusted network of other specialists when required, so you can be assured that you will receive the best possible treatment at all times.

Cape Town Osteopaths was established in 2005 after Drs. Gary & Suzanne Riley relocated from the United Kingdom to Cape Town.  Since this time, Cape Town Osteopaths has achieved an excellent reputation that has been founded upon an honest approach to healthcare.  They pride ourselves on the relationships of trust that we establish with our patients and they, in turn, are safe in the knowledge that they are in competent and trustworthy hands.

    A few facts about Osteopathy:

Developed in the early 1870’s by an American Doctor.  (Chiropractic 1890’s and modern physiotherapy early 20th Century)

Osteopathy takes a global and holistic view of diagnosis and treatment. Suitable for all ages from new born to 90’s. Little or no reliance upon machine based treatment methods, simply effective hands-on treatment techniques. Only one to one consultations.  Average consultation time is 40 minutes. Osteopathy provides a wide array of treatment techniques in order to be able to treat soft tissue (muscles, tendon, ligaments, nerves) and joint conditions.

For even more information about Cape Town Osteopaths, visit www-osteopathy-za.com

If you are still unsure as to whether Osteopathy can help you, call the practice and speak to one of the Osteopaths.  They will be happy to discuss your problem and provide the pathway to the best source of treatment.
