  • Heart Transplant Museum a “must see”.

Posted on March 10th, 2010 17 on Loader No comments

We recently had the privilege of visiting the “Heart of Cape Town Museum” – a wonderful testament to all those who played a role in a surgical feat that pushed the boundaries of science into the dawn of a new medical era, an era in which it became possible to transplant the symbol of the essence of life – the human heart

And this is no ordinary Museum – in fact it is probably the best Museum one can dream to visit – a wonderful guide (who infects you with his keen interested and enthusiasm) takes you on a personalized tour through the exact same rooms where the drama surrounding the first heart transplant unfolded.

From the scene of the car accident which provided the heart for the world’s first heart transplant, through to the actual operating theatres, and on through to the recovery rooms – one gets caught up in the whirl of events that unfolded at Groote Schuur Hospital on December 3rd, 1967.

The museum is open seven days a week and Guided Tours are conducted every two hours.

    Tour times: 09h00, 11h00, 13h00, 15h00 and 17h00 – BOOKING BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL.

Starring ALISTAIR IZOBELL and LOUKMAAN ADAMS
Musical direction and arrangements by SHAUN DEVRIES

TUESDAYS to SATURDAYS from 09th to 27th MARCH 2010

Following the success of WHERE THE BOYS ARE  the extraordinary talents of award-winning performers Alistair Izobell and Loukmaan Adams come together at On Broadway once again from Tuesday 09th March 2010.  The synergy that these two have is electrifying – both have voices that will melt your heart, coupled with Loukmaan’s suave attitude and Alistair’s energy, which is enough to light the Cape Town stadium, this is a show that you cannot afford to miss.

Alistair and Loukmaan have decided to move away from their conventional type of show and tackle one of the most exciting genres of music – swing music – which they both have a deep fondness for, and are at the mature age where they are able to express what the great songwriters tried to capture when penning them.

SWINGTIME ON BROADWAY promises to be an evening of top class entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet to classics which include ‘Straighten up and fly right’, ‘That’s life’, ‘Paper Moon’, and ‘L.O.V.E’, amongst others.

  • Weather in Cape Town in June/July.

Posted on March 7th, 2010 17 on Loader No comments

In the lead up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, we thought it may be of interest to take a look see what the historical weather patterns for Cape Town are during the months of June and July.

It seems that many of the foreigners traveling to South Africa for World Cup have no idea that South Africa will actually be experiencing winter during their stay. Moreover, it is also apparent that many do not realize that South Africa has several micro climates. Whilst sunshine and warm weather during the daytime applies to the Northern parts of South Africa (Like Johannesburg; Nelspruit and Pretoria), Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate – so rain and windy conditions are more prevalent, and probable.

Recently an accommodation establishment in Cape Town was emailed by a prospective guest from America, requesting confirmation that the rooms they had booked for World Cup did indeed have air-conditioning. The response was “No, but we do have central heating!”…

So, according to the South African Weather Services (SAWS), Cape Town has an average rainfall of 93mm (37 inches) in June and 82mm (32 inches) in July, whilst temperatures range from 8°C to 18°C (46°F to 64°F).

And on average, it rains for 13 days in June and for 12 days in July.

    Makes you think…

  • South Africa chosen as one of the Top Ten Ethical Destinations in the World for 2010

Posted on March 6th, 2010 17 on Loader No comments

South Africa has recently been chosen as one of the Top Ten Ethical Destinations in the World for 2010, by green tourism publication Ethical Traveler. Each year, Ethical Traveler reviews developing countries that are working to protect human rights, build social welfare and preserve the environment.

Said a spokesperson from Cape Town Tourism “travelers should be more aware of the impact their travels have on the lands they visit, in the short and long term. This award acknowledges the hard work being done by private and public companies to ensure tourism’s legacy in South Africa. It means this is a model that can work, with far-reaching effects for all.”

Posted on March 5th, 2010 Johannes No comments

Welcome to South Africa!

And again: Welcome to South Africa!!

  • “I Wrote This For You”

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 Jemima No comments

In this day and age where the pen is still greater than the sword (albeit the pen now a technological upgrade in the form of Facebook, Twitter and related-genre) our human condition leads us on the never-ending search for that which touches the core, acknowledges similarities, makes us nod and say “Yes! I get that! How did this stranger know that’s exactly how I feel or what I want to say?!”

’I Wrote This For You’ is an answer to this search.

Iain Thomas is a fictional character created by a group of writers thought to include Neil Gaiman, Allan Moore and Warren Ellis (not confirmed).

Based on the idea of a South African who writes short stories about a character called “You”, the social media experiment named “I Wrote This For You” has proven incredibly successful throughout most of the world, with it receiving numerous accolades and awards, even being presented to the Queen in 2006.

The pictures are supplied by Japanese artist and recluse, Jon Ellis.
