have baffled modern science and these curative properties
of our 43ºC (112ºF), Thermal & Radio Active
Spring have been documented since the early 1800's, and in
comparing them to healing springs around the world, various
notable and authoritative people have placed Avalon Springs
"up there" with the finest.
A "diddley" made up by a guest,
as far back as 1900 which was found in the Guest Book of the
Guest House located at the springs in those days, goes as
follows:
ACCOMMODATION
PRESIDENTIAL SUITE
AT THE AVALON SPRINGS HOTEL
Covering an area of a small
house, this superlative suite, situated on the second floor
of the Avalon Springs Hotel is the epitome of luxury and no
expense has been spared in creating this suite, which easily
compares with the finest anywhere. Drawing on 25 years of
Hotel Development & Management experience, the Owner and
General Manger of Avalon Springs (Mr. Wolf - Dieter Sowade)
personally designed and supervised the creation of "The
Avalon" and every fixture
and fitting , down to the last detail was sourced and acquired
by him in person...
"The Avalon" comprises of 2,
generous double bedrooms, each a spectacle of mirrors and
sumptuously furnished, with an inter-leading en-suite bathroom.
Each bedroom sports it’s own T.V. (with head phones)
which is linked
to the state-of-the-art audio visual system in the lounge
and telephones
are conveniently placed next to each bed as well as in the
lounge. Air conditioning
& ceiling fans will keep you cool in summer whilst under-floor
heating ensures you stay snug and warm in winter.
The bathroom is a "rhapsody in black
& white" and sports marbled sanitary ware throughout.
Under-tile heating provides a luxurious feel to the floor
in winter and there is a separate ablution cubicle with toilet
and bidet. A "jetted" spa bath for two, separate
shower cubicle and "his" & "hers"
vanity basins give "going to the bathroom" a whole
new meaning!
The lounge overlooks the Hotel gardens
& car park and a unique feature
of the main window is the electronic curtain rail which allows
you to open
and close the curtains at the touch of a remote button. Here
you will also find
the heart of the audio visual entertainment center with big
screen T.V,
DSTV, Video, DVD and FULL Surround Sound System.
(A courtesy selection of CDs, Videos and DVD's
are available from the Hotel Reception!)
Part of "The Avalon" is a multi-purpose
bar and dining area, which also allows
you to have meetings for up to 6 persons right in you own
suite and a full set
of conference equipment, fax machine and a computer with Internet
and E-mail link up, is also a standard issue. In fact, whilst
staying in "The Avalon",
you'll even have your own e-mail address.
Whilst self catering is NOT permitted in
the suite, a fridge, microwave oven,
toaster and kettle are provided and various "in suite"
catering options
are available to you from our Food & Beverage department.
Complete with crockery, cutlery & glassware, "The
Avalon" also provides
you with a complimentary bar which, in the event of Halaal
or "Teetotaler"
guests, is replaced with a selection of fruit juices and other
soft drinks.
(Please indicate your preference when booking).
Complimentary coffee , tea & snacks are also provided.
To top it all, "The Avalon" boasts
it's very own 6 seater, indoor spa bath
with a continuous flow of water from our world renowned 43*C
thermal spring. These waters are constantly drained off to
waste, thereby ensuring that all water
in the spa is ALWAYS hygienically clean and fresh as nature
intended!!!
Our biggest concern is, that once checked
in to "The Avalon" we may
never get you to venture outside, but, to entice you, your
VIP status
as a guest of "The Avalon" also provides for the
following:
A daily, full English & South African Breakfast Buffet
in our Cogman's Restaurant per person. The free use of ALL
the resorts facilities, including the 24-hour use
of the hot springs. Automatic, FREE membership to the resort's
Health Spa & Gym (which is right next to your suite) as
well as membership to the Montagu Golf Club (9 holes). Free,
courtesy transport to and from the town (maximum 2 trips
per day) and if the duration of your stay permits it, you
may choose
one of two excursions free of charge (for a maximum of 4 persons
who must
all be staying in the suite) - your choice being either a
Tractor / Trailer Trip
up the 1000m high Langeberg Mountains
or a leisurely River Boat Cruise
down the Breede River. (Please note that both excursions are
subject
to availability and weather conditions)
In order to attend to ANYTHING else that
you may need... our trained & dedicated staff members
are at your disposal and are, but a phone call away, from
06h00
to 23h00 daily, with our night porter covering the hours from
23h00 to 06h00.
For VIP reservations, rates & further
details, please contact Myrtle on Tel : 023 6141150, Fax :

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS:
All accommodation is serviced to 4 Star standards with
24-Hour Room Service, reception and security and each room/
apartment receives one under-cover parking bay. Cots, babysitters
and almost ANY other special requirements are NO PROBLEM,
with prior arrangement. ONLY resident guests have the FREE
use of all facilities. Day visitors to guests MUST "check
in" via reception 8h00 - 23h00 only.
DE-LUXE SUITES
Although not quite in the same league as our Presidential
Suite, our De Luxe Suites ("The Montagu" and "The
Bloupunt") leave nothing to be desired and
(as is the case with all our accommodation)
will satisfy even the most fastidious guest! Both Suites are
extra spacious and can sleep up to 4 people (or more in the
case of small children). Standard equipment includes air-conditioning
and ceiling fans, heating, telephone & hairdryers (in
both the room as well as the bathroom), TV & "Stand
Alone" DSTV, complimentary mini-bar (with full rate only),
Hi-fi,
as well as coffee and tea making facilities with a courtesy
fridge.
Both these suites are front facing and
overlook the Resort's grounds and you will enjoy the superior
furnishings and appointments. The bathrooms are more than
generous and sport "Champagne" marbled sanitary-ware
with his & hers vanity, duette corner bath, separate shower
cubicle as well as toilet and bidet plus underfloor heating
in winter.... Due to their size, the rooms are very comfortable
and accessible for the physically challenged.
LUXURY
FRONT FACING
These rooms are very much on par with the De Luxe Suites and
although a little smaller, are still very generous for two
people and in some cases can even sleep
2 individuals (twins) or even a family of four. Our reservations
staff will advise
you of your best choice depending on your requirements. Rooms
in this category either overlook the Resort's Grounds or the
Hot Springs Complex and feature
a small balcony. Once again, they are all air-conditioned
and heated, have ceiling fans and standard equipment includes
telephone & hairdryer in the room
and bathroom, TV with SABC 1, 2 & 3, MNET, Movie Magic
and Supersport
(subject to change by customer demand). Coffee and tea making
facilities
are provided as is a courtesy fridge. All bathrooms are full
bathrooms,
with showers above the bath and wall heaters for winter, in
addition to which
the bathrooms in Rooms 14 & 15 also sport a bidet. These
two rooms
are also fairly accessible for the physically challenged.
All rooms are sumptuously furnished and you will enjoy the
warmth
and comfort they exude.
LUXURY
MOUNTAIN FACING
Although smaller and mostly only accommodating two persons,
sharing,
these rooms are every bit as comfortable as the front facing
ones and contain
all the same features and facilities with the exception of
Room 10, which only has
a "half bathroom" i.e. only a shower. Items listed
as "standard issue" are exactly the same throughout
these rooms and because of the somewhat reduced price, they
still represent excellent value for money. Views look onto
a natural mountain side behind the Resort, bustling with indigenous
Fauna & Flora and it is not uncommon to spot a herd of
"Klipspringer" or "Duiker" (Mountain Buck)
from your window.
SEMI-LUX
APARTMENTS
Last, but by no means least, we offer a variety of self-catering
holiday apartments. Although the minimum rate for ALL accommodation
includes B&B, should you wish to self-cater for your other
meals, then these units are for you. All apartments
are front facing with a magnificent view over the Resort's
grounds
and the spectacular mountain gorge (kloof) that starts on
our property.
Starting from the front, you get a small balcony, a lounge
with 2 double sleeper couches, a full kitchen (stove, microwave,
fridge, cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils) with a dinette
counter, master bedroom and full bathroom.
Whilst these units can sleep up to 6 persons (some up to 8),
they are a little compact and as such we recommend you don't
sleep more than 4 (or 6) per unit. Again, our reservations
staff will advise you as to the option best suited
to your needs. Air-conditioning, ceiling fans, heating, telephone,
TV, hairdryers
are standard issue and apartments are equipped with toweling
& linen.
MIRACLE WATERS
43ºC Spa & Hot Mineral
Springs
Judging by some "early graffiti" which was found during
the excavations
of the present day pool complex "modern man" has known
about the springs
since the late 1700’s and the "graffiti" referred
to above, is a chiseled rock inscription by an "A.J. De
Wit" dated 1812.
Popular history tells us that a 'Trekboer'
(Pioneer Farmer) had injured his hand whilst repairing the
wheel on one of his ox wagons and whilst bathing the hand
in a stream nearby, discovered that the water was warm and
decided to trace
the stream to it’s origins....the hot springs had been
discovered!
Allegedly the Farmer’s hand, after repeated bathing
in the water, healed
in no time at all & the news of this "miracle spring"
quickly spread throughout
the Cape Colony (and beyond) and people started coming from
all over
the country and the world to experience this natural wonder
for themselves...
However, based on the fact that there are
various Khoi (Bushman) drawings
on rocks and in caves in the greater Montagu area, one can
safely assume
that the springs were most certainly known to these people
for hundreds,
possibly thousands of years before the aforementioned "discovery"
and as such the real date of the origin of the spring is lost
in the mists of time.
During "modern times" the spring
and the land surrounding it has had a varied history and over
the years , has changed hands many times with various owners
putting it to different uses. A full history of these times
is available at the Hotel Reception, with copies for sale
at R10 per copy or by clicking here.
Since 1982, these springs are now part
of the Avalon Springs Spa Resort Hotel
and whilst the process of getting here, as well as the levels
of luxury enjoyed
by visitors from far and wide, are much improved since 200
years ago,
the springs are as natural and perfect as they have always
been...
Bursting from a fissure in the rock face,
in a cavern some 5 meters underground, these waters have healing
powers which have yet to be fully understood.
The water comes to the surface at a constant 43ºC and
the by virtue of the fact that the rate of flow is unaffected,
even by the worst droughts that the area
has experienced, it is obviously coming from very deep down,
with an estimated depth of the source at about 3kms. By virtue
of the fact that the water is 100% clear & clean with
a near perfect Ph when it reaches the surface and it contains
a number of minerals, chemicals & other trace elements,
as well as being mildly radio active, it is obviously undergoing
some natural filtration and picks up
the properties of the various rock strata that it is being
forced through.
This "natural perfection" allows
Avalon Springs to pump the water directly into
the various available pools and spa baths WITHOUT treating,
or in ANY WAY changing it, and as such visitors are able to
enjoy these marvelous waters
in their most natural form. For hygiene reasons the water
is of course chlorinated, but by virtue of the fact that the
water is NOT recycled and is continuously
drained off into the river that flows over the property you
are
ALWAYS enjoying a natural wonder at it’s finest...
Historically, any number of "miracle
cures" have been documented and even today, letters received
at Avalon Springs on a very regular basis, would testify
to the powerful curative properties of the water when it comes
to 'healing' afflictions that appear to baffle even modern
science.
Here are just two examples of such letters:
Fact or fiction, real or imagined, a "miracle cure"
or "all in the mind"...
you’ll only know for sure after YOU have visited
Avalon Springs to find out for yourself!
CONFERENCES AND EVENTS
With so much relaxation going on, on the other web pages,
you may well
be misled into thinking that Avalon Springs is purely for
holidays but, nothing
could be further from the truth and we pride ourselves on
our ability

Amongst our regular (and satisfied clients
-- we would like to add), we are proud
to list companies like Old Mutual, Shell & BP South Africa,

others both large and small. We take this opportunity to thank
them ALL for their continued support!

etc.) are also on offer and with 20 years of experience behind
us
we will advise and assist you, to make your event the one
that will live
in the memory of your delegates for years to come. A number
of entertainers
are "on our books" and we can even organize a local
gumboot dance troupe

the delegates submerged themselves in the hot springs whilst
the conference leader
held his session on the edge of the pool.......... and you
want different?!!
Our purpose built conference room (see diagram below) is fully
airconditioned
and seats up to 130 pax theatre style, 110 pax classroom style
and 50 pax in

are also available and for larger groups special arrangements
can be made
with marquees erected in the grounds.
Standard equipment includes: White and
Black Boards, Flip Charts, TV with VHS video, DVD with Surround

refreshments
during the conference (Mints, Mineral Water and Fruit Cordials).
Meal types range from set menus, carveries, finger buffets,
hot and cold buffets to braais and even spit braais (see Catering
Schedule) What we do promise you is that you will not
go hungry nor will you get bored with the type of meals or
choice of venues.
SOCIAL GROUP PACKAGES
These packages are available for any social group activity
such as company staff outings, schools, churches, sport and
recreation clubs, car and motorcycle associations, 4 X 4 Clubs,
bird watchers (the feathered type, which you can see
in our natural surrounds and the adjoining exotic avairy)
etc. Over the years Avalon Springs has been host to many highly
successful such outings!
Besides the plentiful activities and excursions
into the surrounding area
(not included in prices below), the layout and nature of the
Avalon Springs Resort will allow your group to spend time
relaxing and getting to know each other.
Many a lasting friendship has been forged amongst people whilst
simply
"taking the waters" and whiling the day away around
the Hot Springs.
Most of our clients in this category, are
regular visitors to the resort and in some cases the annual/
bi-annual weekend or mid-week break at Avalon Springs
has become a firm institution on the calender of the relevant
organization.
Amongst these we are proud to count Vulcan/ CAARS, the annual
soccer
weekend of Cape Town based Auditor Firmsand The Department
of Correctional Services (To name but a few).
A number of Cape
Town based transport companies offer various, very reasonable
tour bus rates to the resort and we will gladly assist you
in putting together a package to suit YOUR pocket.

A LA CARTE RESTAURANT & SKY BAR:
The name says it all and this
stunning venue is
situated on the 6th and 7th floor
of the Hotel. V.I.E.W.S is open Tuesdays to Sundays from around
18h00 til late
and there is no better location from which to enjoy a meal

South African cuisine and only the finest and freshest ingredients
are used in our kitchen. All dishes are freshly and individually
prepared so, sit back, enjoy the view and another glass of
award-winning wine, secure
in the knowledge that you are in for a treat.

JOHN MONTAGU BAR
The John Montagu Bar &
Lounge named after Mr. John Montagu
(it is often erroneously thought he was "Sir") is
the Hotel's main "watering hole". Open primarily
to resident guests, this sumptuously
furnished venue is open
24/ 7. Here you will find a vast array of drinks and our staff
will gladly
mix up an exotic cocktail or advise you on your choice of
regional
and other South AfricanTable wines from our
extensive Wine List.
A speciality of this wine list is, that in each category of
wines listed,
we offer you one wine by the glass, which allows you to sample
a small
quantity before committing to the whole bottle or any particular
type of wine.
Air-conditioned,
"The JM", is the ideal meeting place for a pre-dinner
drink
or a winter's evening spent chatting, playing games or just
watching the "telly" with the family in front of
a crackling log fire. During the afternoon, coffee,
tea as well as cakes are served in "The JM".
AVACABANA POOL BAR
The Avacabana Pool Bar situated at the main hot spring pool,
next to our Function Lapa (Boma) is "The Place To Be"
on a hot summer's day. Covered by cool African
thatch, you can sit back, enjoying
a loooong, cold drink and still keep an eye
on the kids in the pools, whilst taking in the stunning natural
rock setting
of the entire hot spring pool complex.
In the late afternoon, you will be delighted
at the many different animals that appear on the rocks high
above the pools
and unless you are super human, you will simply "just
have to let go"
of all your worries and woes.
Depending on the weather (which 99% of
the time is brilliant), The Avacabana
is open on most days throughout the year and on most evenings
in summer.
TAMMY'S BAR
Tammy's Bar is for the young at heart (no under 18's
here or in any of the other bars) and with good music, 50's
style décor (a pool table, dart board
and the games room
with video games, etc. is right next door)...
this is the ideal venue to spend the occasional rainy day
or evening. Tammy's
is normally only open on weekends and during peak times, and
then only
when the Avacabana is closed.
FUNCTION CATERING
Function & Event Catering is one
of Avalon Springs' specialities
and with over 20 years experience there is little we have not
done.
Our single biggest event was to host a 500 strong convention
for 5 days
with three meals per day which translates into 7500 meals for
the duration
of the convention. With not a single complaint out of that vast
amount of meals, imagine what we can do for you. Be it a wedding,
21st, formal dinner, fundraiser, product launch, end of year
company function or anything
else you may care
to mention, please
give us a call first! You will not be disappointed and our
Catering Schedule will give you a pretty good idea of what is
available
and at what price.
Venues are plentiful and any of our restaurants,
bars or function venues
are available for private functions.
"Where our competitors
will tell you it cannot be done, all we need to know
is by when do you want it!"

HOW TO GET TO AVALON SPRINGS
From Cape
Town on the N1 to Avalon Springs: Take N1 to Paarl, through
the Huguenot Tunnel (or over Du Toit's Kloof Pass) and on
to Worcester where
you will pass a Shell Ultra City on your left hand side and
you will get to a set
of traffic lights on the N1.
Proceed straight across these traffic lights to a second set
at which you turn right into Worcester. Follow this road,
over a railway bridge, all the way down to High Street, where
you must turn left into High Str. Carry on
for about 1km and watch for signs directing you to the right
(R60) towards Robertson, Ashton and Montagu. Stay
on the R60 all the way, and once through Ashton it becomes
the R62 which takes you through the Cogman's Kloof
to Montagu. > As you enter Montagu, you are now in Long
Street, which you carry on with, to almost the end of town.
Turn left into
the very last road, being Cross Street. >> At the next
stop, turn right into Bath Street, which you follow about
3km out of town. On your left you will see (illuminated) signs
for Avalon & Montagu Springs. Turn left here into Uitvlucht
Street and immediately swing right and follow this street
all the way down to our car park.
From Cape
Town along the N2
to Avalon Springs: Follow the N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass, through
Caledon and Riviersonderend. Roughly 24km after Riviersonderend
watch for the Stormsvlei turn-off on your left. Turn here
and follow the signs
to Bonnievale. As you approach Bonnievale you will cross the
mighty Breede River. At the T-junction, turn left into the
main street, then turn right towards Ashton
and Montagu at the next stop. Go round the church and follow
the same road out
of town. On your right is the Bonnievale Golf Course (watch
out for the railway crossing). Next you will come to a T-junction
where you must turn left onto
the R60 to Ashton. At the next T-junction, turn right to Montagu
(R62)
and now follow the instructions as above.
From Mossel Bay along the Garden
Route to Avalon Springs: As you pass Swellendam on your
right-hand side, look out for the turn-off to Ashton, where
you must turn right off the N2 and onto the R60. Roughly 70km
later you will reach a T-junction. Turn right onto the R62
(with Ashton to your left) towards Montagu and when you enter
the town follow the directions as above from.
From up country on the N1 (The Boring Route)
to Avalon Springs: Assuming
you are coming down the N1 through Touwsriver, roughly 22km
out of the town
(on the Cape Town
side) you'll see a sign to your left indicating Montagu via
the Koo Valley (R318). Turn left here and follow this route
for approx. 70km.
Whilst breathtakingly beautiful in parts, motorists are cautioned
to drive slowly along this route as there are 2 fairly hair-raising
passes with some VERY tight hairpin bends! (Expect snow in
winter) As you approach the outskirts of Montagu you will
see some (illuminated) signs on your right for Avalon and
Montagu Springs. Turn right into Uitvlucht Street and keep
right. Follow Uitvlucht Str all the way
down to our car park. (4x4 enthusiasts may also consider the
gravel road alternative
from Touwsriver via Ouberg Pass and Langkloof)
( See map for more details.)
From Beaufort West (The Scenic
Route) to Avalon Springs: 6km outside Beaufort West on the
Cape Town side, turn left onto the N12. This takes you via
Klaarstroom, Meiringspoort (Spectacular!) to De Rust and on
to Oudtshoorn
(The Ostrich
Capitol of the World). >>> Find your way onto the
R62 and head through Calitzdorp
(after which there is spectacular Huisrivier Pass), Ladismith
(stay on the R62 -
it turns left!), Barrydale, and onto Montagu. As you come
into the town,
the very first road on your right is Cross Street. Turn right
here and follow
the instructions from >> above. (For the more adventurous,
you could consider coming down the N1 as far as Prince Albert
Road and turning left onto the R328, make your way via Prince
Albert over the Swartberg Pass to Oudtshoorn,
from where you follow directions
above from >>>. Not recommended at night,
in bad weather or if towing!!!)
Have a safe journey and watch for speed
traps in most towns.
Most important of all:
"PLEASE don't drink and drive, we
prefer our guests ALIVE!"
