Mpumalanga

The former Eastern Transvaal, Mpumalanga is Big 5 territory. Home to the Kruger National Park and a variety of private game reserves, including the Sabi Sands, this is South Africa’s safari terrain. Renowned for its flora and fauna the province is a popular destination for nature lovers, bird and game watchers and hikers. There are horseback safaris and fabulous fly fishing on offer here too.

Directly translated, Mpumalanga means the place where the sun rises, and there is nothing like a lowveld sunset to get the day started. With amazing natural wonders like God’s Window, Bourke’s Potholes, the Mac Mac Falls and Blyde River Canyon, visitors are constantly wowed by the beauty of the province.

Nelspruit, the capital, is in the Crocodile River Valley and is famous for its fruit and tobacco growing. With Jacaranda lines avenues, Victorian houses and neatly tended gardens it is the perfect base for exploring the region.

Another popular town for visitors to visit is Pilgrim’s Rest. A throwback to days gone by the town is a tribute the area’s gold rush. Walking through the streets of the town, it is not hard to imagine what it must have been like in the days when prospectors were prominent and gold fever was catching.
