Gauteng is South Africa’s smallest province, but is the mostly densely populated. The financial and industrial capital not only of South Africa, but of Southern Africa as a whole, Gauteng is where the gold rush began over two hundred years ago, and today is where all the major wheeling and dealing is done. The richest of the 9 provinces, Gauteng is home to the country’s state capital, Pretoria, and the financial capital, Johannesburg.

Pretoria, known as the Jacaranda City, comes alive in spring with violet blossoms that bloom on the trees that line the wide avenues of the city. It is where visitors can find the Union Buildings. This is the official seat of the South African government and is also where the president holds office.

Johannesburg, known as Egoli – the city of gold, is the African economic powerhouse. It is a vibrant, moving and shaking place where its people work hard and play hard too. With a wealth of highly acclaimed theatre, fabulous restaurants, bars and clubs, as well as being steeped in history and culture, there is no shortage of things to do here. Visit the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill to explore South Africa’s shady past, or the Hector Pietersen Museum in Soweto. For something a little lighter there is Gold Reef City, a veritable feast of sights, sounds and awesome entertainment.

Other things to do in Gauteng include a visit to the Cradle of Mankind, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, a huge selection of art galleries, museums and world class boutique shops and shopping malls. There is a constant buzz throughout the province, movers and shakers come here to do their thing, and do it in style.
